Very deep crimson in colour. Sweet lifted aromas of blackberries, plums, cassis and mulberries with hints of anise, cedar and vanilla. Ripe sweet blackberry fruits on the lush, layered palate; complex, with velvety tannins, great concentration long and silky.
Grape variety consists of 63% shiraz, 18% cabernet sauvignon, 10% merlot, and 9% cabernet franc grown in the Barossa (Eden Valley and Barossa Valley).
Matured in 20% new, 80% used French (50%) and American (50%) hogsheads for 20 months prior to blending and bottling.
Vintage 2005 was early, warm quick fantastic quality with good yeilds - and exhausting.
Above avergage winter rains led into a beautiful spring, with some early November frosts but good flowering weather in late November and earlt December. Summer was wet and wild, with amazing roller-coaster of weekly thunderstorms that helped maintain good subsoil moisture. Rains in January were followed by a dry February. and the dry weather comtinued right through the autum. Warmer than usual autumnnal weather caused an early, compact harvest of above average yields. The late Indian summer lasted into May, well after all the fruit was harvested, at matureity figures, flavour and colour not seen before the 2002 vintage.
The quality of the 2005 vintage is sure to be ranked as one of the best on record, after 2002, with all varities showing strongly. Once again the signature varieties for Eden Valley.
