Penfolds Bin138 Grenache/Mourvedre/Shiraz 2007

$36.99 OR $399.49 IN A DOZEN

Crimson/garnet - medium intensity.
With the opulence of Barossa Grenache to the fore, juniper berry and ripe quince and pomegranite fruits and a spicy/nutty/liqueur lift give way to the savoury/cold meat/pan juice aromatics of the Mourvedre and Shiraz coalition.
Wonderful, warm Barossa primary fruits (wild raspberry, loganberry) merge into a pool of liqueur cherry-chocolate heighted by cherry-pip tannins.
The high Mourvedre component (21%) explains the persuasive gravely tannin on thr finish.. Flavours suggest Barossa and the texture mirrors its varietal composition.
Although proudly Barossa, some would purport that the 2007 is texturally more reminiscent of its Rhone origins than previous vintages.
The grape variety is Grenache (66%), Mourvedre (21%) and Shiraz (13%).
This wine was was matured for 14 months in five year old oak hogsheads and grapes sourced from Barossa Valley.
2007 in the Barossa was a drought year that produced low yeilds of intense fruit. It was an early vintage, with low rainfall and warm weather contributing to early budburst and flowering. Mild to warm weather throughout summer helped the fruit to mature well and rains at harvest allowed the fruit to recover and ripen with good varietal character.
Try with cheese, duck and game.
