The Y Knot is a fortified Shiraz from the 2008 vintage. An exceptional heat wave just on ripening elevated sugar ripeness way beyond anything I had experienced in 32 years of winemaking. The option was to make a vintage port style wine and Y Knot. Old vine Shiraz fruit ensures the ingredients are excellent. Incredible concentration and sugar ripeness with just the right amount of wine has produced what I hope is a one off. By sight - the colour is a very dark mahogany, bulls blood, deep and opaque purple blackberry right to the rim. The grapes were drying on the vine and a high skin juice ratio extracted every bit of red/black from the grapes. By aroma - a classic nose of red and black fruits, tea leaf, mint, chocolate, smoke and roast meats. The spirit used to fortify the wine is a subtle background peppery note. By taste - warm and rich in the mouth-blackberry and licorice flavours, smooth mid palate and a long complete finish, great balance of fruit and brandy spirit. |
